Houston Events January 6 – 15

Happy new year! Here are a bunch of upcoming events that I’m excited about. Also the next meeting of the HTX Afrofuturism Book Club is this month and we’re reading volume one of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Panther comic and a short story Amnesty by Octavia Butler. Friday, January 6

Hear Her Ear: Women in Sound (night 1) at 6:30pm at Art League Houston. Readings, writings, and sound/music performances by women artists.

19 Days in January Screening: Do the Right Thing at 8pm at Rec Room. Daily free screenings leading up to the president-elect’s inauguration.

Saturday, January 7

First Brunch Service at 11am at Kitchen 713. This new black-owned restaurant on Washington is debuting their brunch menu.

Pride Portraits Open Photoshoot at 1pm at Pride Portraits. P.R.I.D.E. Portraits stands for photographs representing individuals deserving equality. Our mission is to visually represent the LGBTQ+ community and its allies one photograph and story at a time.

The Resolution Party at 8pm at Bayou Place. A fundraiser event with performers raising money to send Houston representatives to the Women’s March on Washington.

Sunday, January 8

Bocage Catering Brunch at Axelrad at 12pm. Chef Keisha Bocage is bringing an amazing menu to Axelrad to kick off a series of brunches. I’ll be there!

Southside Connection Bike Ride at 4:30pm at Sunny Side Park. Join the group for a 16-20-mile ride at a moderate pace.

Monday, January 9

The Iron Yard Demo Day at Station Houston at 12pm. Free lunch! See fledgling developers show off the fruits of 12 weeks of labor and learn about this coding bootcamp.

Houston League of Women Voters: Program, Issues, Advocacy Meeting at 6pm at Leonel Castillo Community Center. Learn about the LWV and advocate for education and healthcare issues to address in lobbying efforts.

19 Days in January Screening: American History X at 8pm at Rec Room. Daily free screenings leading up to the president-elect’s inauguration.

Tuesday, January 10

Listening Men Forward w/ Marlon Hall, Elliot Dean & Dan Houston at 7pm at Café Brasil. A community conversation about masculinity.

Wednesday, January 11

19 Days in January Screening: A Scanner Darkly at 8pm at Rec Room. Daily free screenings leading up to the president-elect’s inauguration.

Wayvy Wednesday w/ Froyo Ma & Mulherin at 8pm at Satellite Bar. $5 is cheap for a concert with visitors from LA and TN in addition to local artists on the Milky Wayv label.

Tailored Wednesdays feat. Mireya at 8pm at Leon’s Lounge. One of my favorite DJ nights with music videos and a live performance by local singer Mireya! Also free food.

Thursday, January 12

Magdalena Fernandez: Flexible Structures at 6pm at Sicardi Gallery. This Venezuelan artists’ solo exhibit looks pretty so check it out.

ONE Houston Partnership Meeting at 6pm at United Way of Houston. If you’re interested in learning about education advocacy in Houston.

Flow: Lettering In The Age of Hip Hop with Erik Marinovich at 6:30pm at the CAMH. A lecture on the parallels between lettering and hip hop.

Friday, January 13 (Happy Founders’ Day to the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc!)

AftaWurk Houston: A Black professional monthly at 6pm at Belvedere. A new event for young black professionals. Let me know how it is because I usually avoid these. Make sure you RSVP for free entry.

Zadie Smith at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church at 7:15pm at St. Paul’s UMC. Author extraordinaire Zadie Smith will be in conversation with Mat Johnson likely about being mixed among other things. I’ll absolutely be here.

Saturday, January 14

Opening: Floyd Newsum – Black and White with Gray and Color at 5pm at Nicole Longnecker Gallery. I like Floyd Newsum’s work and he has 2 pieces in the Blacksonian. Check him out.

Black Girl Magic HTX ArtShow at 6pm at Midtown Bar & Grill. Don’t know much but I like the title and there’ll be free Lonestar beer.

Badass Art Man: Artist Talk with Danny Simmons at 1pm at Houston Museum of African American Culture. This artist, author, and poet from Queens will be reading excerpts from his book. He calls his style of painting neo-African abtract expressionism.

Positive Self-Talk: New Year Edition on January 21. These positivity journaling workshops are fun and this will be a special vision board/collaging session.

Day for Night Festival Blind Presale. The festival just ended. It keeps getting better after having Kendrick Lamar its first year and wide range of artists this past December.

JMBLYA, the big Scoremore festival, is doing its blind presale for events in Dallas and Austin in May. Previous years have had Future, Chance the Rapper, and plenty of other names if you listen to contemporary rap.

A Conversation with Reps. Senfronia Thompson & James White at Prairie View on March 31. Free lunch and conversation with elected officials.
