Houston Events: April 24 – April 30

Here’s my I Don’t Do Clubs list along with a few extras. Enjoy! I highly recommend checking out the GoldLink concert with Little Dragon on Thursday but there’s a nice range of concerts this week. THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE ERA OF BETSY DEVOS
Monday, April 24, 2017, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
HCC trustee and Houston Federation of Teachers president Zeph Capo, HISD supt. Richard Carranza and Dr. John D. Ogletree, Jr. of Pastors for Texas Children will discuss at the annual meeting of Americans United for Separation of Church and State Greater Houston Chapter. Learn more here.  

2. A TASTE OF BREWING WITH 8TH WONDER
Monday, April 24, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Head to Mongoose Versus Cobra as the fantastic brewermasters from 8th Wonder come in and teach the science that goes into making some seriously good beer. Part of a full week of science-oriented events. The events are free but venues do have limited seating. Learn more here.  

3. CHIVAS REGAL TASTING WITH MIGUEL GALAN
Tuesday, April 25, 2017, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Head downtown to whiskey bar Reserve 101 for a Chivas Regal tasting with Brand Ambassador Miguel Galan. Tickets for this event are $20 and 100% of the proceeds will go to Rescued Pets Movement. You’ll get to try four different high-end selections. Learn more here

JAMES FRANCIES TRIO AT MATCH
Tuesday, April 25, 2017, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
20-year old Houston native pianist and HSPVA grad James Francies has generated a well-deserved buzz. DownBeat honored him twice for Composition and Jazz Arrangement and he performed at the famed Monterey Jazz Festival. Francies can often be seen on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with the Roots. $20 in advance. Learn more here

4. AB-SOUL – THE YMF TOUR WITH LITTLE SIMZ
Wednesday, April 26, 2017, 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
California rapper Ab-Soul, member of the group Black Hippy alongside Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q, is touring following the December release of his new album. He’s backed by London rapper Little Simz who has been rising rapidly in popularity. Learn more here

HOUSTON STARTUP DEMO DAY

6. CONCERT: LITTLE DRAGON AND GOLDLINK
Thursday, April 27, 2017, 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Swedish electronic band Little Dragon comes to Houston following the release of their latest album Season High. They’re backed by rapper GoldLink, whose song Crew with Shy Glizzy I can guarantee you’ve heard. This will be a great show, but I wouldn’t blame you for going to see Nao instead. Learn more here

Producer and singer-songwriter Nao’s music is a fun combination of electronic and soul, backed by her unique voice. Advance tickets are $18 for this show in The Studio of Warehouse Live. Learn more here

7. WAXAHOLICS THURSDAYS
Thursday, April 27, 2017, 8:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
Your favorite 2000s hits will be played non-stop at this long-running, all-vinyl event led by local DJ collective, The Waxaholics. It gets a bit crowded but I wouldn’t recommend showing up before 11:00 p.m. Go ahead and take a nap if you have to work on Fridays. Learn more here.

8. BROOKLYN ATHLETIC PRESENTS…B.A.C. IN THE DAY PARTY
