Houston Events: March 13 – 19

Here’s an expanded post based on this week’s I Don’t Do Clubs listicle. Last week was busy for me as I volunteered for the Black Girls Code Houston launch, attended Writefest, enjoyed several artists at Creative Women Unite, and checked out the new black-owned Ogun Art + Wine shop in the heights.

Black Girls Code Comes to Houston!

1. MAYOR SYLVESTER TURNER PRESENTS “A RAISIN IN THE SUN”
Monday, March 13, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Join Mayor Sylvester Turner as he introduces the award-winning drama A Raisin in the Sun, his selection for the MFAH’s ongoing Movies Houstonians Love series. This film adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s socially conscious play features powerful performances by the original Broadway cast: Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Ivan Dixon, Louis Gossett Jr. and John Fiedler. 2. MOVIE NIGHT: AMELIE W REAL ALE BREWING CO.
Monday, March 13, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Axelrad will have the owner of Real Ale here at this movie night with his brand new Pinsetter Amber Lager beer along with plenty of others to choose from. Fortunately, if you decide to make this a romantic date night with the classic French film Amelie, Axelrad Beer Garden has a full bar to cater to everyone. 3. BINGO NIGHT AT THE SECRET GROUP
Tuesday, March 14, 2017, 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Comedy promoters The Secret Group are bringing people to their space pretty much daily. Bingo Night includes prizes, ticket giveaways & more! It’s also hosted by comedians and free. Learn more here.

4. BOONDOCK SAINTS – SAINT PATTY’S DAY TV DINNER NIGHT
Wednesday, March 15, 2017, 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
To show holiday spirit, Lowbrow is holding another one of their TV Dinner Nights with a classic action film paired with beer and food. It’s the perfect way to kick off your evening before heading to Alley KatLeon’s Lounge, or The Flat for reggae night. Where else can you get a mouthwatering corned beef sandwich on potato bread? 5. TAILORED WEDNESDAYS AT LEON’S LOUNGE
Wednesday, March 15, 2017, 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.

6. STRAIGHT NO CHASER – SADE APPRECIATION NIGHT

The long-running album listening party Straight No Chaser Wednesdays recently changed from monthly to weekly. If you aren’t already familiar, check out DJ Flash Gordon Parks spin for their artist tribute-themed Wednesday night event. Learn more here.

7. REGGAE WEDNESDAYS AT THE FLAT

8. HMAAC FILM SERIES – CHISHOLM ’72: UNBOSSED AND UNBOUGHT
Thursday, March 16, 2017, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
This is the first historical documentary on Brooklyn Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and her campaign to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 1972. The story follows Chisholm, the first black Congresswoman, from the announcement of her candidacy for president to the Democratic National Convention in Miami, Florida. Learn more here.

9. CRAFTIVISM HOUSTON MARCH POSTCARD PARTY
Thursday, March 16, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Craftivism Houston is a monthly meetup in which attendees create useful, political items together as a group. Bring your own project to work on or join them in writing, creating, decorating and sending political postcards to representatives! They’ll also have supplies available to create protest posters, letters of support and information about petitions. BYOB + Bring Snacks + Some will be provided. Learn more here.

10. THURSDAY NIGHT DRAWING SESSION
Thursday, March 16, 2017, 9:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Drawing sessions are held every other Thursday night at La Playa featuring a new live nude model each time. Come relax, create, and enjoy the atmosphere of La Playa! BYOB. Usually these types of events request donations for the model. Learn more here.

11. FOR THE COMMUNITY THIRTEEN
Friday, March 17, 2017 – Saturday, March 19, 2017, 3:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
Visionary Noise and The Houston Free Thinkers present For the Community Thirteen, #FTC13, a two-day multi-stage festival featuring music, art, poetry, and merchants. There’s an enormous lineup of participants for this free event! Learn more here.

12. CRAWL FOR THE CULTURE: 3RD WARD HOUSTON EDITION
Saturday, March 18, 2017, 11:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

13. 4TH ANNUAL CELEBR8ION OF BEER
Saturday, March 18, 2017, 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
8th Wonder is turning 4, and we’re throwing it down as we do. Rain or shine! Tickets will include beer and will grant you admission to the festivities which will include live music, food trucks, and more. 14. THE BLACK & WHITE ART SHOW 2.0
Saturday, March 18, 2017, 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
The Hardy & Nance Studios is pleased to present The Black & White Art Show 2.0 which coincides with our third Saturday Open Studios on March 18, 2017. This year we have over 120 artist presenting more than 300 pieces of black, white, and grayscale art in our gallery. Learn more here.

15. ELECTRO BOUNCE

Calling all people who love to get down on the dance floor: Electro Bounce fuses a multitude of genres with the sole purpose of making your booty move. 16. THE SHAKEDOWN “MAKE IT LAST FOREVER” PARADISE GARAGE TRIBUTE

17. CELEBRATIONS OF J-DILLA

J-Dilla, the legendary Detroit rapper and producer known for his unique ear and style continues to be remembered after his death. First, on Saturday we have E=mc2: A J-Dilla Love Story to Hip-Hop Art Show followed by a Sunday concert featuring rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother and Apollo Brown. Learn more here.

18. EAT IT RAW VEGAN “COOKING” CLASS WITH FULLY RAW KRISTINA

Join Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram of Rawfully Organic Co-op and learn how to make delicious meals for the entire family from raw and organic foods. Kristina will share her passion for this healthy lifestyle by teaching and demonstrating how to prepare seasonal dishes from a variety of raw and locally grown produce.
